Halloween Safety Tips for Parents

Halloween Safety Tips for Parents

Halloween can be scary for a few reasons. Especially when your children are asking strangers for candy. Safety is a huge concern for your little ones, no matter their age. Here are 10 helpful Halloween safety tips during Halloween from your Greenville insurance provider.

Visible Costumes

Some Halloween costumes are perfected with the art to blend in so no one sees them coming. However, with drivers this can be risky. If your trick-or-treater has picked a dark color or camouflage costume consider adding light-up swords, necklaces or glow sticks. Have them be a part of selecting the perfect addition to their costume at the store which will help them be more visible to cars.

Test Run

If face paint, fake blood, or costume makeup is being used for the first time, do a test run before Halloween or the party. Apply a small amount of the makeup to see if they show any allergic reactions that could detour Halloween trick or treating.

Spooky Costumes & Decorations

For younger children take some time to explain any of the spooky costumes and decorations that can be luring around the corners. We all know the houses who go all out to scare the neighbors, but for young children this might be their first interaction, explain that it is all pretend. You may also want to consider bringing your kids favorite blanket or toy to hold if they get scared.

Stay Safe & Never Go Inside

Remind your children, no matter their age that trick or treating does not mean they have to go in the house. Always stay outside to get candy and carry on to the next house. Trick-or treaters could be tempted to go inside if they see the candy bowl inside.

Choking Hazard

Look through the candy they have received and make sure all of it is age appropriate for your child to consume without choking.

Inspect the Candy

In today’s day and age you can never be too careful. Take time to look at the candy to make sure it is safe. Look for tears in the wrapper, discoloration, or candy that has been repackaged.

Homemade Treats

A safe rule is to only accept homemade candy from people you personally know. This helps eliminates any danger from something being in a treat that your child my be allergic to.

Paint Pumpkins

While carving pumpkins is a great tradition to have, giving a knife, even a plastic knife to a young child can sound like disaster written all over it. Consider a new tradition and paint a pumpkin! This can be easier and the pumpkin will last longer.

Make it Glow

Instead of using candles which are fire safety hazards use glow sticks or battery operated candles. You can add to the eerie vibe by using different colors.

Clear the Way

Kids won’t always use the sidewalk. Take a moment to clear your sidewalk and yard free from any tripping hazards. Keeping the porch light on will also help avoid injuries.
